Dead Volusia County animals give off a string stench, making it very easy to follow its scent in order to find where it is located. Once you are sure the stench is from a dead bat, then you would know exactly what you are looking for. Before you attempt to follow the stench to search out this creature, you would need to take some precautionary measures.
A Volusia County bat may die as a result of several circumstances. For instance, you may have implemented a bat exclusion technique and a bat remained trapped inside the area, thus dying eventually from starvation. Then more than likely, this was a baby bat, unable to fly on its own. Babies are heavily dependent on its mother for food since it takes them several weeks before they can learn. Another circumstance would be that the bat contracted the rabies virus. When bats contract this virus, they search out a quiet area in which to die. Not knowing the reason for the demise of the bat, can be detrimental if you do not protect yourself before searching it out.
Here are some measures you can take to protect yourself:
Wear thick clothing.
Florida bats live in colonies so there may be a chance that there are other bats in the area. Bats become aggressive if they feel threatened and may attempt to bite you as a defensive mechanism. Not all bats carry the rabies virus, but you still need to protect yourself.
Disposable clothing.
In addition to the thick clothing, you should wear a layer of clothing that can be easily thrown out. Dead animals carry many different parasites and organisms that are severely unhealthy for humans. There are disposable coveralls available or you can make a make-shift outfit with large garbage bags. This would have to be removed from your body at the exit of the area in which you are searching for the dead creature. Cover yourself from head to toe and wear a face mask.
Spray bottle with solution
Bat droppings are extremely dangerous when dried since this is when they become airborne. Bats that carry the histoplasmosis fungus, spread the disease through it feces. If you inhale this, you become infected immediately, suffering at first, from flu-like symptoms and then fatal respiratory symptoms, eventually leading to death. In order to prevent the feces from becoming airborne, you would need to mist the area before you step forward.
Vacuum
You can use a vacuum instead of the spray bottle with solution, vacuuming the area as you step forward.
Garbage Bags
You would need to dispose of the animal immediately once you find it. Walk with some garbage bags to place the dead animal in as well as to remove your disposable clothing once you are exiting the area. You can also walk with a scoop pick up the animal and throw it away.
Once you have geared yourself fully and acquired all the necessary equipment. Head to the direction of the area where the dead bat may be located, such as in the attic. Search thoroughly in all the crevices and holes as well.
